Winter Barley

Hordeum vulgare var. Winter
Winter Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is an annual grass native to southern US states (such as Oklahoma, Texas, and North Carolina) and has also been successfully introduced across North America as a non-invasive crop that can thrive in USDA Zones 4–10 as a cool-season annual. Reaching a mature height of 2–3 feet with an upright tillering growth habit, it features smooth green leaf blades and produces bristly, grain-bearing seed heads. It thrives in well-drained fertile soils and is ideal for overwintering cover cropping, livestock winter grazing, and soil erosion mitigation.
