Vervain, Blue

Blue vervain, also known as swamp vervain and simpler's joy, is a native that can be found distributed across most of the contiguous United States. A tall, 2-6 feet, perennial plant that blooms between June and September with multiple purple/blue flowers that open throughout its blooming period. An important plant to pollinators makes it an excellent option for butterfly gardens and landscaping needs. It grows best in full/partial sun and moist soils but grows well across a variety of habitats and soil conditions. Its bitter taste keeps it from being grazed by large mammals and livestock, which allows it to grow well in overgrazed pastures. Maintenance of the plant is simple with it spreading via rhizomes and seeds.
