Sunflower, Stiff

Helianthus pauciflorus

Stiff Sunflower is a native perennial that is tolerant of many different soil types and saturations, although it prefers loose, medium to dry soils. Spreading via rhizomes, this plant can form large colonies in preferred growing conditions and can become quite aggressive if given the chance. It is believed to have allelopathic properties that help increase its spread by reducing neighboring competition. Preferring to grow in full sun and open uplands and grasslands, it should be used in conservation plantings and restoration projects. Growing from 1-7 feet in height, depending on conditions, it is topped with a bright yellow flower from July-September, making it one of the earlies sunflower to bloom. Its flowers are sought by pollinators of many species before setting seed, which provides food for small mammals and birds. Highly palatable, it is sought after by cattle and will decrease with extensive grazing.
