Andropogon gerardii
Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) is a perennial grass native to central and eastern US states (such as Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, and Texas) that can thrive in USDA Zones 3–9. Reaching a mature height of 4–8 feet with an upright clumping growth habit, it features green to blue-green leaves that turn reddish-bronze in fall and produces three-pronged, purplish "turkey foot" seedheads. It thrives in deep, moist to dry prairie soils and is ideal for tallgrass prairie restoration, livestock pasture grazing, and wildlife cover.
